Organic Chemistry Unit

Sample Curriculum Unit

Organic Chemistry is often one of the last units to be taught in many schools’ Chemistry curriculum. When classes fall behind schedule, organic chemistry is often never touched upon. I have been fortunate enough to have the time to explore this unit with my students. Additionally, the California Standards for the unit do not cover much material. So, I took the oppurtunity to go beyond the standards and taught students how to draw and name organic molecules. This was basically an intro to college Organic Chemistry and I found that the students really enjoyed drawing and naming organic molecules. It was also evident to me that they really appreciated their own abilities to tackle this intro unit at the same level as college students.
